CBQ is a business that I established as a dedication to my rural roots of Mississippi. The Magnolia State has the most beautiful state tree and flower.
My sewing/quilting journey started when I was very young. I remember opening my grandmother’s round tin can to retrieve needle and thread in order to mend small holes in my pants. One of the most vivid memories I have is of my grandmother cutting small squares from old pants and shirts. She didn’t have a ruler or sewing machine. All summer long she was cutting and sewing while watching her stories and cooking dinner. The outcome was a beautiful looking scrappy quilt that kept us warm during the winter. When I was in around the 7th or 8th grade, we were required to take Home Economics. My teacher was Mrs. Jennie Johnson. In this class, I was exposed to my first sewing machine. After learning all of the parts and operation of the sewing machine, we had to sew a project and wear it to school for a grade. I made a baseball type jersey with a black body and white sleeves. I then attached a baseball patch to it. I was a huge White Sox fan then. I remember being so proud of this item that I made from these little tissue patterns.
After this class, I didn’t think much of sewing or quilting. I would see different items in stores and just admire the stitching on the items. Even today, I love the top stitching in luxury cars. I begin my quilting journey around 2016. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I wanted to purchase a quilt. After looking at the pricing, I was like I can just make my own. Yeah, that was not accurate! At least not that easily. I purchased a Brother DZ3000 from Amazon. I took it out of the box for about an hour and then returned it to the box for about 2 years. By this time, YouTube was becoming a popular place to learn new skills so I began watching and building my skills. After a lot of fabric and money later, I had my Harry Potter quilt. I still use it to this day.
Today I have many interests. I’m always trying to learn different skills. I’m into Foundation Paper Piecing, Embroidery and Ruler Work. As the years have past, I am realizing that what I’m doing is artwork. That’s the way I approach all of my projects, as a piece of art. It’s something that I can leave behind once I’m no longer here.
